The main library hall of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra is housed in the former Barcelona water tank (Josep Fontseré, 1874), while the book collections, access foyer and all the library services are housed in another building annexed to this one. The new project is juxtaposed to existing building and alters it in no way. It acts merely as a support, so that if the new structure were dismantled, it would reappear intact. Fontsere’s building is a unique structure upon which two prefabricated concrete elements are superimposed to create a set of mezzanines that provide different environments in which to read.
